Fowler had stepped onto the 17th hole in regulation one clear of clubhouse leader Harris English (-12) and two clear of Matsuyama.
However a bogey on that hole brought him back to the 23-year-old Japanese golfer who birdied the same hole for a two-shot swing and he took full advantage in a dramatic playoff to claim the tournament.
